Road Scholar educational adventures are created by Elderhostel, Inc., the not-for-profit world leader in lifelong learning since 1975.

For more than 25 years, Mountain Trails Outdoor Learning Center (formerly Davis Mountains Education Center) has organized and led highly rated Road Scholar tours in Texas and northern Mexico, including Copper Canyon. Participants learn about astronomy, botany, birding, geology, history and the varied cultures in the region.

For details, itineraries, available dates and prices of our currently scheduled programs, visit the Road Scholar website. The programs we run are listed below. Some programs are seasonal and only appear on the Road Scholar website when they are being offered. You can search for our current programs on the Road Scholar website by typing the program number or “Fort Davis, Texas” in the Search box.

Exciting & Fun Outdoor Education Field Trips for Schools

Mountain Trails Outdoor Learning Center (formerly Davis Mountains Education Center) strongly believes in the importance of educating young people about acting responsibly to protect the environment and instilling in them an appreciation and respect for nature.

We provide safe, supervised outdoor field trips covering a variety of topics in science, history, culture, and the environment. Through our high-quality educational tours, students learn real-life skills that will benefit them for the rest of their lives.

Our outdoor education programs include field trips to our partner organizations in the Davis Mountains and Big Bend (see below for some of our partners). While in Fort Davis, students and chaperones stay in cabins and eat home-cooked meals in the dining room at the Lodge OR at popular local restaurants. On field trips to Big Bend National Park or other attractions in West Texas and southeastern New Mexico, including Guadalupe and Carlsbad Caverns National Parks, students stay in partner hotels and eat in popular local restaurants. For insurance reasons, schools use their own busses or vans to transport students to locations.

We can customize an educational program that meets the needs of your group of elementary, junior or senior high school, or college students. Let us know what curriculum you are studying, and we will create the perfect outdoor education plan! Contact Us

Featured Classroom Project

When Kirby Hall School visited us in spring 2010, they created this thank-you note to DMEC staff during a papermaking workshop. We enjoy the kids as much as they enjoy the education programs!

Mountain Trails Outdoor Learning Center partners with these entities and others to provide high-quality outdoor education programs.
